Foolish!

Luke 11 (Part II)

Jesus calls them Foolish!

39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish people!

I hate it when I have to wash the dishes, especially the glasses because I have to clean the inside and really make sure that the bottom of it is clean, it takes effort so much, but I realized that if I did not clean the inside especially the bottom part, who will drink from that glass? Only foolish people will drink clean water from a dirty cup.

I believe Jesus here is telling me that who we are in the outside reflects our inner being. If we are like beautiful cups yet our inside is dirty then we are useless, for no one can benefit from God. We must clean the inside first then it will reflect the outside appearance. After all, God looks at the heart and not on the face.

Allow me to describe here the people whom Jesus calls as foolish:

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.

These are the people who give their offerings to God yet their hearts are away from Him. They give out of compulsion and not with a cheerful heart.

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.

These are the people who feel so very important, and see themselves highly above others.

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves, which people walk over without knowing it.”

These are the people who cause others to fall; they are the rock that causes other people to stumble along the road.

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.

These are the people who wanted to be served but don’t know how to serve.

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them.

These are the people who tries to undo what can’t be undo, people who tries to cover up for the past.

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”

These are the selfish people who don’t want to share what they have, their knowledge and talents. They are afraid that someone can outshine them.

Lord, if ever a foolish thing grows in me, kindly pluck it out immediately so that I may not be looked down but be blessed.
