A personal reflection on Psalm 47
I remember what Pastor Chico Pena said during one Sunday service, it was during the time of 2012 London Olympics, he says, “If we can cheer and shout for the basketball players, boxers, and other athletes, what more to God, who deserves all the praise?”
It is in the nature of every Filipino to love sports and music. In fact, the world can really see the unity in us as we support Manny Pacquiao and Jessica Sanchez in their personal battles before. We were all saddened as they lose, but in all their success and even failures, our shout and cheer for them never ends. We feel the pride as a Filipino every time our Kababayan is recognized worldwide, we are in great awe with their gifts and abilities.
The Bible says, “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.” (Psalm 47:1)
Clap for God? Shout to God? Why? Is God an athlete? a Filipino who holds different boxing belts/titles? Is God a singer? an American Idol?
“For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth.” (Psalm 47:2)
God is most high, he is awesome. He is a King over all the earth! Our praises for Him will never be enough to proclaim His greatness.
When Prince William got married, the world almost stopped just to watch the so-called Royal wedding. When Manny Pacquiao has a fight, there is no traffic, there is low criminal rate, for all eyes (even the criminals) are on his game. When Jessica Sanchez was on stage, the Filipinos shouted and cheered for her even if she cannot hear it.
But how about to God? What do we do for His every second greatness? Do we stop and cheer for Him too?
The Psalmist encouraged us to be like cheerers and fans of God – to praise, shout, and cheer for Him, he says: “Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise.”
God deserves all our praises every millisecond of our lives. Every star, beauty queens, athletes, and royals belong to Him.
“for the kings of the earth belong to God” – Psalm 47:9
All our praises are due to Him. In our lives, he is to be lifted high, he is to be greatly exalted. (Psalm 47:9)
